Pat’s Quilts |
Quilt derived from the tiled floor of St. James church in Weybridge. Quilted with star patterns |
Design derived from a tiled floor pattern in Salerno cathedral. Entered into the ‘Quilts UK’ exhibition in 2000. This quilt, and the one to the left, are both illustrated in the book ‘Geometric Patterns from Patchwork Quilts’ by Robert Field. |
Entry in the themed division of ‘Quilts UK’ (Malvern) in 2000 (‘Bountiful Baskets’). Pieced wall and windows. Baskets of flowers, fruit, and vegetables are appliqued, and the petals and leaves are appliqued individually. The hymn book is harvest hymns, computer printed onto fabric. |
Entry in the themed division of ‘Quilts UK’ (Malvern) in 2001 (‘Forests, Trees, and Leaves’). It is an abstract design representing the four seasons; quilted with an overall stem and leaf pattern. |

Bargello style panels on a dark purple Patchjacket, with zip front. |
Diamond pattern on a navy blue Patchjacket - this one also has a diamond panel applied to the back. Button front fastening.

The first bed quilts. One based on triangles, and one based on simple square patterns. The colour arrangement is loosely based on log cabin. Furnishing fabric was used. The sides are not pieced, but are machine quilted. The tops are tied. Headboards (hard to see) are diamond log cabins, flanking a card-trick block.
The chair seat loose cover uses one block from the bed design, with a border to make up the size. The chair back cover is a paper foundation pieced pineapple block, again with borders to make up the size. |
Bargello.
A patchwork, rather than a quilt (no batting) which is intended for use as a bedspread. An early quilt, in a technique which Pat (and Dave) loves, but which was really challenging for an early work.
It needed around 100 full height seams to be sewn, all of which have to be parallel, in order to keep the final pattern rectangular (which it is .. the trapezoidal shape here is due to the difficulty of hanging, and photographing, something 8’ by 7’).
The finished work is intended to represent sky over mountains, above forests, meadows and lakes.
This piece has virtually no quilting, just enough to hold the layers together, following the curves of the design. |
Chim-chiminey. Pat’s first entry to the Malvern quilt show (1998). The theme was ‘hearth and home’. Design based on roofs, chimneys, and black/white timbering of the cottages in this area. The quilting replicates the picture as a line drawing, on the back. Perspective introduced to make the picture look like a view from a window. |
Kaleidomosaic. Made for Pat’s brother, with his choice of colours. Based on Judy Dales’ technique. Quilting mostly outlining, with some decorative patterns in the spaces |
Japanese-Style Applique.
One block was made in a class (folding and cutting paper to create the design template). Other blocks added later, along with a tassel, to cmplete the hanging.
The colour scheme is black on cream, and the quilting (which is hard to see) is geometrical patterns |
Tessellated Autumn Leaves. A well known patchwork pattern, which has been made into a duvet cover. The pieced top is lined (but with no batting), and has press-fastener tape all round, so the lower part can be washed separately. Quilting is simple diagonal lines,, widely spaced. |

“Room for One More?”
A miniature quit (~14” tall) entered in the 2002 “Quilts UK” Malvern show. Winner of the prize for “best piecing”. Yippee!!
The quilt shows an open cupboard full of rolled/folded quilts, infested with cats .. this is only loosely based on the current state of Pat’s sewing room, honest.
Thanks to Dave, who suggested a miniature, and provided copious cups of tea during the construction, and to Tigger who (unwittingly) posed for the various cat shapes while Dave snapped away with the digital camera. However most of the effort, including re-doing several pieces that didn’t work out right the first time, was Pat’s. |
One “AttaGirl”, as awarded by Dave. |
